Videos published on George Mason websites must meet accessibility, brand, and content quality standards. All videos must be embedded using a YouTube or Vimeo link. Do not upload standalone video files directly to the CMS.
Accessibility Requirements
Videos should be created with accessibility in mind and must meet standards set by WCAG 2.1 AA, Section 508, and the ADA—as outlined in the Accessible Media Guidelines from George Mason’s Assistive Technology Initiative (ATI).
- Captions: All videos must include accurate closed captions. Captions must reflect all spoken content and relevant sounds (e.g., music or sound effects).
- Transcripts: When possible, provide a downloadable transcript that includes all spoken dialogue and visual descriptions.
- Audio Descriptions: Pre-recorded videos should include audio descriptions for essential visual information. Live videos must provide live captions.
- Keyboard Accessibility: The video player must be fully operable using a keyboard, including controls for play/pause, captions, and volume.
- Autoplay: Autoplay should be avoided. If used, users must be able to pause or stop playback immediately. Visual Considerations: Use high color contrast, readable text overlays, and avoid rapid flashing or strobing content that could cause seizures or disorientation.
