Web Managers

OUB is transitioning from the term 'Site Owner' to 'Web Manager' to better reflect the role's focus and responsibilities.

Web Managers are experienced content stewards responsible for maintaining high standards in their site's content, structure, and overall user experience.

Web Managers are essential to the success of not just their unit's site, but to the entire GMU web landscape. Because every site on the gmu.edu domain contributes to George Mason's overall web impact—poor accessibility or brand inconsistencies on one site can impact the university's wider web presence.

Responsibilities

Web Managers have two primary responsibilities:

Qualifications

Web Managers must:

  • Be a regular staff or faculty member. Students may serve as Content Editors but not as Web Managers.
     
  • Have content editing experience with any CMS (e.g., Drupal, WordPress, SiteCore).
     
  • Be familiar web content strategy and web user experience best practices.
     
  • Be familiar the federal, Commonwealth of Virginia, and George Mason University policies, standards, and guidelines related to websites and web content, including data use, system security, digital accessibility, and the university brand.
     
  • Be able to dedicate 5 to 10 hours per week, depending on site size, to maintain and support the website.
